The Boonah Airfield is a highly valued community asset that is used by various groups supporting the Scenic Rim region. In recent years Boonah Airfield has most notably been the base for the water bombing aircraft fighting the bushfires in the Scenic Rim area. The airfield is also regularly used day or night, by the Emergency Management Qld rescue helicopters transporting critically ill patients from Boonah to Brisbane.
The airfield was originally developed in 1978 as an aerial life-line to Brisbane for the greater Boonah community and also as a haven for recreational pilots and aviation enthusiasts. Because of its convenient location central to the Scenic Rim, it was chosen as the home base of the Flying Tigers Ultralight Club, the Boonah Gliding Club and Airsport Qld.
The two large hangars that you can see half-way down the runway, are the Ultimate Aero aircraft maintenance organisation. This is a maintenance facility second to none, providing maintenance services to local, national and international aircraft owners. Ultimate Aero are proud of the fact that, as local Boonah residents themselves, all of their technicians are locals as well.
Who and what is Boonah Aviation Inc. (BAI)?
When Boonah Shire was absorbed into what is now the Scenic Rim Regional Council (SRRC), the airfield then came under the governance of the SRRC. In negotiation with several airfield users, Boonah Aviation Inc. (BAI) was formed as a volunteer group of aviation enthusiasts to manage the airfield. A lease was drawn up between SRRC and BAI to formalise the management of the airfield. Over the years the group of BAI volunteers have ensured that the airfield is maintained to the highest standards possible ready for the recreational, commercial and emergency services operations that occur daily at the airfield.
All costs to manage and maintain the airfield are met by the various airfield user groups and there is no cost to the council or the rate-payers of the Scenic Rim.
Welcome to the new BAI Management Committee
At the last BAI annual general meeting, a new management committee was voted in. As well as continuing to maintain the communities airfield to the highest possible standards, the new BAI management committee are looking forward to establishing a positive working relationship with the Scenic Rim Regional Council, to negotiate an appropriate lease and work with them to enhance airfield facilities that will serve the needs of airfield users and the wider community into the future.
